Satellite Derived Bathymetry: Methods and Results

DigitalGlobe's WorldView-2 is the first high-resolution multispectral satellite to provide eight spectral sensors at 2-meter resolution, enabling it to see further into the water and support bathymetric studies around the globe. Remote sensing of the shallow ocean floor has become much clearer as a result of the additional spectral bands, including Coastal Blue. This webinar demonstrates satellite-based technology, developed at DigitalGlobe to determine water depth in shallow coastal environment. The webinar highlights capability and limitation learned from numerous validation results, where we compare depths derived from WorldView-2 imagery with LIDAR and acoustic data. The comparison was performed across representative sites in the Bahamas and Caribbean, covering diverse benthic habitat ranging from bright sand to dark algae, in clear and turbid waters.
