Vegetation Analysis in the Desert Using Satellite Imagery

Proteus was asked to lead a team using WorldView-2 satellite imagery to inventory tree plantations. Image processing techniques were deployed using all eight WorldView-2 multispectral bands plus one panchromatic band, with an emphasis on the mid-infrared spectra. This multi-step processing was able to depict all trees greater than 1 square meter in size, and distinguish several tree species by their individual canopies. This project demonstrates the viability of using very high-resolution multispectral data to establish a baseline inventory of tree type and health within diverse forest plantations. This tree mapping technique can be applied to create forest inventories of other species elsewhere in the world.

Globalization and Protecting Our Shared Global Heritage From a Geospatial Perspective

There is major global interest in the issue of archaeological site looting, with new reports from the Middle East nearly every day about stolen and recovered objects. What specialists have not done, however, is quantify in a scientifically valid format the total amount of site looting in each country affected (Egypt, Syria, Libya). In addition, no one has successfully tracked the looting networks from the ground to the owner's homes/museums. The best way to do this is to use high-resolution geospatial datasets. This webinar discusses a methodology for the mapping of looting pits using a combination of new and archived imagery from DigitalGlobe, as well as additional datasets.

    Satellite Derived Habitat Mapping

Effective management of the world's coastal zone is becoming increasingly important as pressure from population expansion and natural resource exploitation grows. This pressure is only too evident in one of the fastest growing economies in the world, Abu Dhabi. In early 2013 a consortium led by Proteus was awarded the contract to produce habitat maps for all of Abu Dhabi Emirate using DigitalGlobe WorldView-2 imagery. DigitalGlobe's WorldView-2 satellite is unrivalled in delivering high-resolution multispectral imagery using eight spectral sensors at 2-meter resolution. This has allowed a wide variety of habitats to be mapped in great detail with lower costs and environmental impact than previous methods. The outcome for Abu Dhabi government is an ecological baseline survey for focusing conservation efforts and managing sustainable development. This webinar focuses on the methodologies that are being deployed and provides examples of the maps that have been produced so far.
