Geocarto International Centre (Hong Kong)

Geocarto International Centre (GIC) was established in 1985 in Hong Kong to promote multidisciplinary research in and application of Remote Sensing, GIS, Geoscience and Cartography through (1) publication of scientific and professional periodicals, books, images and maps; (2) provision of distribution services for publishers of these subjects, (3) organization of exhibitions on Remote Sensing & GIS, (4) marketing of satellite data (digital and photographic products) for both research projects and practical applications, and (5) provison of technical advice to customers in the application of Remote Sensing technologies. Through these activities, GIC performs an integrated function in promoting Remote Sensing technologies.

Since 1986 GIC has been publishing an English language multidisciplinary quarterly journal entitled Geocarto International on Remote Sensing and GIS to serve the need of Asian and international science community. This international journal has publicized several commercial earth observation satellites by publishing special issues over the past 19 years. The International Editorial Board of this peer-reviewed academic journal comprises leading scientists from 17 different countries. To promote research in and application of Remote Sensing & GIS, GIC has published 8 books on these subjects, and 18 satellite imagery posters for worldwide distribution.

GIC distributes a broad range of commercial satellite data/products of different resolutions, including QuickBird, IKONOS, SPOT, Landsat, and RADARSAT; and is a reseller of GEOImage software and Idrisi Kilimanjaro geoanalytic and image processing software. The Centre has produced a series of 3D satellite images of Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, South China on CD-ROMs.

Since 1995 GIC has been a sustaining member of the International Society for Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing (ISPRS).
